Des Plaines, IL (November 10, 2020) — Peak Construction Corporation’s philanthropic arm, PeakGiving, was honored to host a Food & Clothing Drive benefitting The Self-Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines. Over the last three weeks of October, PeakGiving collected approximately 300 pounds of food and gently-used fall and winter clothing to assist those in need in the Des Plaines area, where Peak’s headquarters is located. In addition to Peak employees, many of Peak’s partners also generously donated, including Connelly Electric Co., Harris Architects Inc., Heritage Carpentry, Inc., Ryan Incorporated and Schuepfer, Inc.
“Food insecurity has always been a major cause for Peak and this year we heard that call to action louder than ever. The pandemic has adversely affected so many people, specifically increasing food insecurity in households where it didn’t previously exist and more so in households with children due to school and program closures. We were thrilled to find the Pantry right in our back yard and connect with Debbie Walusiak,” Jessica Bruno, PeakGiving’s Director, shared. According to Crain’s Filling the school meal gap, Des Plaines is one of many Chicagoland areas that has seen a major increase in individuals served through pantry or market-style food distribution programs.
The Self-Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines is an independent organization helping those in need since 1971. They currently provide for more than 400 Des Plaines area households. In addition to local organizations and businesses who provide food and financial support to the Pantry, their trademark “Red Barrels” can be seen in about 50 locations around town for convenient drop-offs. The Pantry recently moved to 769 Holiday Lane and is currently providing curbside pick-up due to the pandemic.
